about

"Weelaunee Kaleidoscope" is a digital-only benefit compilation organized in support of the Defend the Forest/Stop Cop City movement, and more specifically of the ATL Solidarity Fund. As the situation in Weelaunee Forest has escalated over the last month, this benefit was organized on short notice to quickly raise funds to aid the stand against Cop City and police oppression & violence. I am not affiliated with any "leaders" of this movement and organizing in this manner is possible for anyone, please see how you can get involved! Endless endless thanks to all artists who contributed to this release, it is amazing to see and incredibly heart-warming. I did my best to sequence the tracks in a mindful way - the opening track is a very special one, composed in honor and memory of Tortuguita, a forest defender who was killed by Atlanta Police on Wednesday morning, January 18th. Thank you for your support and for reading through, I hope you enjoy this as much as I do <3

>This release is named after one of my personal favorite art installations to have existed within the Weelaunee Forest - a communal kaleidoscope meant to connect users to one another and to their environment, a truly wonderful and radical display/practice of interconnectedness (in my opinion). In December 2022, this piece was dismantled and literally beat down by a police raid in the Weelaunee forest, ultimately granting it even more meaning. The purpose and symbolism of this piece is what I hoped to also convey & accomplish with this compilation, featuring well over 60 artists from across the hellish country we live in. The album art is a photo taken through the kaleidoscope that was edited for the purpose of this release.

>Here is a statement from the creators (Shlooewp) upon its installation: "it is now semi-collapsed and integrated into the landscape of the Weelaunee Forest. the @defendatlantaforest movement is one about inventing and discovering new futures. about the power of love and community and the preciousness and joy of nature. we hope in leaving this piece there some of you who may not have wandered there will seek to- and in turn see the beauty and love that is being cultivated in these woods. we hope for those who frequent the forest and defend the forest that this may be a portal of rejuvenation- a place to be lost in for a moment- and as we all meet it and engage with it- see ourselves and our friends and the trees and clouds thru it- we feel it multiply the love energy and eventually become a beacon- projecting our collective love and hope and happiness."

>Here is a statement from the creators (Shlooewp) upon its destruction: "it felt inevitable that they would have destroyed our kaleidoscope, but the fervor with which they did is beyond expectation. here you'll see what's left of the kaleidoscope. battered and bent the glass is all but crumbled. this is a piece of artwork. bestowed to public land to inspire and connect. and it did just that. while our hearts are heavy that some with we spent months building so quickly has been destroyed, we know it was better it be in the world and stand for something than last eternally in a storage unit or gallery- asking to be preserved and painted for the sake of its artness. while it is a heartbreaking loss, it had a purpose. and any moment of joy it brought any one of u was exactly worth the time it did have."

>ATL SOLIDARITY FUND STATEMENT ON REPRESSION OF THE STOP COP CITY MOVEMENT:
"Over the last two years, Atlanta has spoken out against the proposed Cop City training facility and the destruction of Atlanta's forests. During this time we have seen a dangerous escalation of protest suppression and police aggression against protesters: from the first arrests of eleven peaceful protesters snatched off the sidewalk during the Cit Council vote approving Cop City, to the continued raids against tree sitters camped out in public parks, to the mass arrest of twenty non-violent protesters and journalists in Inman Park. The Atlanta Solidarity Fund has supported over sixty people arrested for protesting the proposed Cop City development, and we are committed to supporting all protesters arrested for standing up for their beliefs and fighting for a more just world.

On Saturday, January 21st, six people were arrested after protests in response to the death of Manuel "Tortuguita" Teran. We have reason to believe these activists were arrested at random during the march. All six face the same blanket charges - they are being held responsible for committing the same crime by virtue of simply being present at a protest where property damage occurred. We expect these charges will not hold up in court, and we are committed to helping these individuals fight their cases all the way through the legal process.

At a bail hearing on Monday, January 23rd, bail was denied for four of these arrests in an effort to keep protesters off the streets. Two of the arrestees were granted bond at the unprecedented cost of $350,000 each, along with onerous bail conditions including ankle monitors and curfews. These are punitive measures intended to isolate activists and drain their emotional and financial resources, and an attempt to use the legal process to punish activists with the full knowledge that these charges stand little chance of a conviction at trial.

The Atlanta Solidarity Fund remains committed to supporting all protesters arrested for standing up for social justice, and we need your help to continue doing what we do best: supporting activists with bail and legal counsel as long as necessary. We are also supporting civil litigation against unjust arrests and police violence, including an independent investigation into the death of Manuel "Tortuguita" Teran."
